The first steps of this lesson
Step 1: Where Handrails Are Required
2025 CBC Section 1011.11 requires handrails on each side of a flight of stairs, with one-side exceptions for flights inside dwelling units and for spiral stairs. 2025 CRC Section R318.7.8 requires a handrail on at least one side of every flight with four or more risers. Accessible routes follow 2025 CBC Section 11B-505.2, which requires handrails on both sides of stairs and ramps.
Step 2: Height and Lateral Position
2025 CBC Section 1014.2 sets handrail height at 34 to 38 inches, measured vertically from the line connecting the stair nosings, and the height must be uniform along the flight. Fittings or bendings that make a continuous transition between flights are allowed to exceed 38 inches. A handrail located outward from the edge of the walking surface must be within 6 inches of that edge (CBC Section 1014.3). 2025 CRC Section R320.2 prints the same 34 and 38 inch limits.
