Steps in this lesson

  1. The Gatekeeper Rule (1010.2.9)
  2. Door Hardware Release (1010.2.10)
  3. Sensor Release (1010.2.11)
  4. The Common Thread: Power Loss Unlocks
  5. Before You Leave the Job

The worked example in the course applies this lesson to a realistic job in 5 steps, from "Identify the method" through "Check the sign and the fire alarm tie".

What you'll be able to do

  • Explain the main idea of "Electrically Locked Egress Doors: Hardware Release and Sensor Release" in plain language you can use on the exam.
  • Apply this step with confidence: "Sensor Release (1010.2.11)".
  • Apply this step with confidence: "The Common Thread: Power Loss Unlocks".
  • Apply this step with confidence: "Before You Leave the Job".
  • Test yourself on the worked example and the quick-check quiz inside the classroom.

The first steps of this lesson

Step 1: The Gatekeeper Rule (1010.2.9)

2025 CBC §1010.2.9 applies whenever electrical systems monitor or record egress activity, or whenever the door has an access control system. On the egress side, the locking system must comply with one of the release methods in §1010.2.10 through 1010.2.15, or the door must be readily openable from the egress side without a key or special knowledge or effort. A card reader on the outside does not exempt the inside: this rule decides how a person leaves.

Step 2: Door Hardware Release (1010.2.10)

Permitted in any occupancy except Group H, if all six are true: the release hardware on the door leaf has an obvious method of operation that is readily operated under all lighting conditions; it can be operated with one hand and complies with §1010.2.1; operating it directly interrupts power to the electric lock and unlocks the door immediately; loss of power automatically unlocks the lock; where panic or fire exit hardware is required by §1010.2.8, operating it also releases the electric lock; and the electromechanical or electromagnetic locking device is listed to UL 294 or UL 1034.

The remaining 3 steps, the worked example and the quiz are in the course. This is a preview. The full lesson, with the step-by-step explanations, a worked example and a quick-check quiz, is inside the classroom.
