The first steps of this lesson

Step 1: What the Tile Setter Controls

2025 CBC Section 11B-608 covers shower compartments in public buildings, public accommodations, commercial buildings and public housing. The tile setter's work shows up in four things the section prints: the threshold height, the floor slope, the floor surface, and the drain grate. Get the mortar bed wrong on any of these and the shower fails inspection even if the plumbing is perfect.

Step 2: Compartment Sizes the Floor Must Fit

11B-608.2 prints three sizes. A transfer-type compartment is 36 inches by 36 inches clear inside, with a 36 inch wide entry on the face. A standard roll-in compartment is 30 inches wide minimum by 60 inches deep minimum with a full opening on the long side, with a 36 by 60 inch clearance outside the open face. An alternate roll-in compartment is 36 inches wide by 60 inches deep minimum with a 36 inch entry at one end of the long side. Your bed and tile must not shrink these clear dimensions.

The remaining 3 steps, the worked example and the quiz are in the course. This is a preview. The full lesson, with the step-by-step explanations, a worked example and a quick-check quiz, is inside the classroom.
