The first steps of this lesson
Step 1: What D-34 Installs and Which Rule Applies
CSLB defines D-34 Prefabricated Equipment as installing prefabricated products and equipment, and the list includes all forms and types of toilet and shower room partitions and accessories, store fixtures, laboratory equipment and similar items (CSLB, Get Licensed to Build, D-34). A partition installer sets the walls, door and accessories of the toilet compartment, so the accessible-compartment numbers in the 2025 California Building Code (CBC) Chapter 11B, Section 11B-604 (water closets and toilet compartments) and Section 11B-609 (grab bars), decide where every piece goes. Plumbing fixture counts and pipe sizes belong to the plumber; the compartment geometry is yours.
Step 2: Compartment Size and Water Closet Location
CBC 11B-604.8.1.1: a wheelchair accessible compartment is 60 inches minimum wide, measured perpendicular to the side wall, and 56 inches deep minimum for a wall-hung water closet or 59 inches deep minimum for a floor-mounted one, measured perpendicular to the rear wall. An ambulatory accessible compartment (11B-604.8.2.1) is 60 inches deep minimum and 35 to 37 inches wide. CBC 11B-604.2 puts the water closet centerline 17 inches minimum to 18 inches maximum from the side wall or partition (17 to 19 inches in the ambulatory compartment). Do not use 56 inches deep unless the fixture really is wall-hung.
