The first steps of this lesson
Step 1: Why a Softener Is a Fire-Safety Device Too
2025 CRC Section R309.2 requires an automatic sprinkler system in one- and two-family dwellings (with listed exceptions), and R309.3.1 says a multipurpose system provides domestic water to both the fire sprinklers and the plumbing fixtures. Anything that restricts flow in that shared piping, such as a softener, filter or automatic shutoff valve, reduces the water the sprinklers get. CRC R309.3.7 therefore requires a sign or valve tag at the main shutoff valve warning that such devices shall not be added without a review of the fire sprinkler system by a fire protection specialist.
Step 2: The Pressure Equation (CRC Equation 29-1)
CRC R309.3.6.2.1 gives the pressure available to push water through the interior sprinkler piping: Pt = Psup - PLsvc - PLm - PLd - PLe - Psp. Psup is the supply pressure, PLsvc the loss in the water service pipe (Table R309.3.6.2(1)), PLm the water meter loss (Table R309.3.6.2(2)), PLd the loss in devices other than the meter, PLe the elevation loss (Table R309.3.6.2(3)), and Psp the maximum pressure required by a sprinkler. A softener belongs in PLd.
