The first steps of this lesson

Step 1: When a Limited Access Zone Is Required

Cal/OSHA Construction Safety Orders section 1722(a) requires a limited access zone whenever a masonry wall is being constructed. Section 1504 defines it as an area alongside a masonry wall under construction that is clearly demarcated to limit access by employees. The zone is established before the wall is started, and it goes on the side of the wall that will be unscaffolded, since that is the side a falling wall or loose unit would hit.

Step 2: How Wide the Zone Is

Measured perpendicular from the base of the wall on the unscaffolded side, the width equals the height of the wall to be constructed plus 4 feet (1722(a)(3)). The zone runs the entire length of the wall. If a property line or an adjacent structure prevents that width, the zone is the width the obstruction permits. Use the height of the finished wall, not the course you are laying today, because the zone is set up before the wall starts.

The remaining 4 steps, the worked example and the quiz are in the course. This is a preview. The full lesson, with the step-by-step explanations, a worked example and a quick-check quiz, is inside the classroom.
