The first steps of this lesson
Step 1: The Trench Bottom and the Inspection Window
California Plumbing Code (CPC) 2025 section 313.5 requires piping in the ground to be laid on a firm bed for its entire length. Section 105.2 puts the underground inspection after the trench is excavated and bedded and the piping is installed, but before any backfill goes in, and section 105.2.1.2 says no building sewer or drainage system may be covered until it is tested, inspected, and accepted. For a pipeline crew that means: bed it, lay it, test it, call the inspector, and only then backfill.
Step 2: Size the Trench Width From the Pipe OD
CPC section 314.4.1 sets the trench width for thermoplastic sewer pipe as not less than 1.25 times the outside diameter (OD) plus 12 inches, or the OD plus not less than 16 inches. Run both formulas; the OD + 16 inch version is the larger one for pipe under 16 inches OD and the 1.25 x OD + 12 version is larger above that. Using the larger result is the conservative way to read the two options, and your inspector may require it. Always use the actual OD of the product, not the nominal size.
