The first steps of this lesson

Step 1: When 11B-703 Applies to Your Sign

2025 CBC Section 11B-216.1 says new or altered signs shall be provided in accordance with Section 11B-216 and shall comply with Section 11B-703. Interior and exterior signs identifying permanent rooms and spaces must comply with 11B-703.1, 703.2, 703.3 and 703.5 (Section 11B-216.2; exterior signs not located at the door to the space need not meet 703.2). Directional and informational signs must meet 703.5 (Section 11B-216.3). Not required to comply: building directories, menus, seat and row designations, occupant names, building addresses, company names and logos, and signs temporary for 7 days or less (Section 11B-216.1 exceptions). Signs are field inspected after installation, including Braille dots and cells and the size, proportion and type of raised characters (Section 11B-703.1.1.2).

Step 2: Raised Characters (Section 11B-703.2)

Raised characters must stand at least 1/32 inch above their background, be uppercase and sans serif (not italic, oblique, script or highly decorative), and be selected from fonts where the width of the uppercase letter O is 60 to 110 percent of the height of the uppercase letter I. Character height is 5/8 inch minimum and 2 inches maximum, measured from the baseline on the uppercase I. Stroke thickness of the uppercase I is 15 percent maximum of the character height. Line baselines are spaced 135 to 170 percent of the raised character height, and text is horizontal.
