Steps in this lesson

  1. A Disconnect on Every Sign (8 CCR Section 2560.2)
  2. Within Sight, or Lockable (Section 2560.3)
  3. Bottom Edge 16 Feet Above Vehicle Areas (Section 2560.10(b))
  4. Clearance From Open Conductors (Table 2560.10)
  5. Setting Poles and Using Boom Trucks Near Overhead High-Voltage Lines (Section 2946)

The worked example in the course applies this lesson to a realistic job in 4 steps, starting with "Boom clearance".

What you'll be able to do

  • Explain the main idea of "Sign Disconnect, Height, and Line Clearance (Title 8 ESO)" in plain language you can use on the exam.
  • Apply this step with confidence: "Bottom Edge 16 Feet Above Vehicle Areas (Section 2560.10(b))".
  • Apply this step with confidence: "Clearance From Open Conductors (Table 2560.10)".
  • Apply this step with confidence: "Setting Poles and Using Boom Trucks Near Overhead High-Voltage Lines (Section 2946)".
  • Test yourself on the worked example and the quick-check quiz inside the classroom.

The first steps of this lesson

Step 1: A Disconnect on Every Sign (8 CCR Section 2560.2)

Article 73, Electric Signs and Outline Lighting, of the Cal/OSHA Electrical Safety Orders requires each sign and outline lighting system, or the feeder or branch circuit supplying it, to be controlled by an externally operable switch or circuit breaker that opens all ungrounded conductors (Section 2560.2(a)). Exceptions: an exit directional sign located within a building, and cord-connected signs with an attachment plug. Each outline lighting installation, and each sign other than the portable type, must have that disconnect within sight of the sign (Section 2560.2(b)). For installations built on or after May 5, 2008, signs located within fountains need the disconnect at least 5.0 feet from the inside walls of the fountain (Section 2560.2(c)).

Step 2: Within Sight, or Lockable (Section 2560.3)

Section 2560.3(a) says the disconnecting means shall be within sight of the sign or outline lighting it controls, and where it is out of the line of sight from any section that may be energized, it shall be capable of being locked in the open position. If the sign is run by an electronic or electromechanical controller located outside the sign, the disconnect may be within sight of the controller or in the controller enclosure; it must disconnect the sign and the controller from all ungrounded supply conductors, be designed so no pole can be operated independently, and be lockable open (Section 2560.3(b) and the exception to 2560.2(b)).

The remaining 3 steps, the worked example and the quiz are in the course. This is a preview. The full lesson, with the step-by-step explanations, a worked example and a quick-check quiz, is inside the classroom.
