The first steps of this lesson

Step 1: Why the CBC Regulates Sign Plastics

Sign faces, channel-letter faces and routed panels are plastic, and Chapter 26 treats them as light-transmitting plastics (Section 2606.1) or foam plastics (Section 2603). Section 2606.2 requires enough technical data to substantiate the use of a light-transmitting material, and Section 2606.3 requires each unit or package to be identified with a mark or decal showing the material classification. Keep the label with the job file: the building official may ask for it.

Step 2: Light-Transmitting Plastic: CC1 and CC2 (Section 2606.4)

Light-transmitting plastics must have a self-ignition temperature of 650 degrees F or greater (ASTM D1929) and a smoke-developed index not greater than 450 (ASTM E84 or UL 723), or a maximum average smoke density rating not greater than 75 (ASTM D2843), and be one of two combustibility classes. Class CC1 has a burning extent of 1 inch or less at a nominal thickness of 0.060 inch or the thickness intended for use (ASTM D635). Class CC2 has a burning rate of 2 1/2 inches per minute (1.06 mm/s) or less under the same conditions. Section 2606.5 and 2606.6 require the assembly and fastening to withstand the Chapter 16 loads, with allowance for expansion and contraction.
