The first steps of this lesson

Step 1: Who Sets the Count and What Counts as a Space

The plans set the number of accessible stalls, but the striping and sign contractor has to check the layout against the code before paint goes down. 2025 California Building Code (CBC) Section 11B-208.1 says that where parking spaces are provided, accessible spaces must be provided per Section 11B-208. For this count, electric vehicle charging stations are not parking spaces (see Section 11B-228). Lots used only by buses, trucks, delivery vehicles or impound are exempt as long as public lots have a passenger drop-off and loading zone under 11B-503.

Step 2: Read Table 11B-208.2 by Total Spaces

Count every parking space in the facility and find that total in Table 11B-208.2. The printed table is: 1 to 25 = 1; 26 to 50 = 2; 51 to 75 = 3; 76 to 100 = 4; 101 to 150 = 5; 151 to 200 = 6; 201 to 300 = 7; 301 to 400 = 8; 401 to 500 = 9. Where more than one parking facility is on a site, Section 11B-208.2 says to calculate the accessible spaces for each facility separately.

The remaining 3 steps, the worked example and the quiz are in the course. This is a preview. The full lesson, with the step-by-step explanations, a worked example and a quick-check quiz, is inside the classroom.
