The first steps of this lesson

Step 1: Measure From the Centerline of the Paint

2025 California Building Code (CBC) Section 11B-502.1 says that where spaces are marked with lines, widths of parking spaces and access aisles are measured from the centerline of the markings. If a space or aisle is not next to another space or aisle, the measurement may include the full width of the line. A 4-inch line therefore eats 2 inches of each neighboring stall, so layout from the centerlines, not from the edge of the paint.

Step 2: Stall and Aisle Sizes

Section 11B-502.2 sets car and van spaces at 216 inches (18 ft) long minimum, car spaces 108 inches (9 ft) wide minimum, and van spaces 144 inches (12 ft) wide minimum. The exception lets a van space be 108 inches wide if its access aisle is 96 inches wide. Section 11B-502.3 requires every space to have an adjacent access aisle at least 60 inches wide that runs the full length of the stall. Two spaces may share one aisle, and van aisles go on the passenger side (11B-502.3.4).

The remaining 3 steps, the worked example and the quiz are in the course. This is a preview. The full lesson, with the step-by-step explanations, a worked example and a quick-check quiz, is inside the classroom.
