The first steps of this lesson
Step 1: When Removal Comes First
Section 84-9 of the 2025 Caltrans Standard Specifications covers removing existing markings. Section 84-9.03A says to remove existing traffic stripes before making any changes to the traffic pattern, and Section 84-9.01C requires you to submit your proposed removal method at least 7 days before starting and to allow 2 business days for review. On a parking lot restripe the same logic applies: take out the obsolete stall lines before laying the new pattern so drivers never see two layouts.
Step 2: What a Removal Item Includes
Under Section 84-9.03A, remove traffic stripe includes removing pavement markers (including any markers in the gaps) within the line of removal, stripes of varying material, and stripes up to 20 inches wide, with the width including contrast. Pavement markings must be removed so that no part of the marking is still visible. Any area removed by grinding is to be rectangular.
Step 3: Grinding Limits
Remove contrast stripes, traffic stripes and pavement markings by methods that do not remove pavement to a depth of more than 1/8 inch (Section 84-9.03A). Limit the removal to the area bounded by 6 inches before and after the actual striping material and within 2 inches left and right of it. Water must not puddle in the ground areas, and ground areas on asphalt concrete pavement get a fog seal. For a 4-inch stripe the allowed ground strip is therefore 4 + 2 + 2 = 8 inches wide.
The remaining 2 steps, the worked example and the quiz are in the course. This is a preview. The full lesson, with the step-by-step explanations, a worked example and a quick-check quiz, is inside the classroom.
