The first steps of this lesson

Step 1: Two Codes, Two Counts

The 2025 California Green Building Standards Code (CALGreen), Section 5.106.5.3, sets how many electric vehicle (EV) capable spaces and EV charging stations (EVCS) new nonresidential construction must provide, using Table 5.106.5.3.1. The 2025 California Building Code (CBC), Section 11B-228.3, then says how many of the charging stations must be accessible, using Table 11B-228.3.2.1. CALGreen Section 5.106.5.3.4 sends accessible EVCS to CBC Section 11B-228.3. For the accessible parking count in 11B-208, EV charging stations are not counted as parking spaces.

Step 2: Read CALGreen Table 5.106.5.3.1

Pick the row by the total number of actual parking spaces. For example 101 to 150 spaces requires 25 EV capable spaces and 12 EVCS (other than office and retail) or 19 EVCS (office and retail); 151 to 200 requires 35, 18 and 26. At 201 and over, EV capable spaces are 20 percent of actual parking spaces, and EVCS are 50 percent (other) or 75 percent (office and retail) of the EV capable spaces. Footnotes: calculations round up, each EVCS reduces the required EV capable count by the same number, and at least one Level 2 EVSE is required.

The remaining 3 steps, the worked example and the quiz are in the course. This is a preview. The full lesson, with the step-by-step explanations, a worked example and a quick-check quiz, is inside the classroom.
